Space to Create Grand Lake & Grand Spirit Makerspace

What Is Space to Create & the Grand Spirit Makerspace

On September 13, 2025, the Town of Grand Lake officially broke ground on Space to Create Grand Lake—launching an exciting new chapter for our creative community. What began in 2019 with more than 350 survey responses (including over 150 from Grand Lake residents) has grown into a community-driven development designed to give artists, makers, and locals more space to live, work, and create. The project includes nine workforce live/work rental units with storefronts, a 3,000 sq. ft. year-round Makerspace, and a new permanent home for the Grand Lake Creative District—making Grand Lake the third Space to Create community in Colorado.

Live, Work & Create in Grand Lake

Space to Create Grand Lake is designed with accessibility, inclusion, and community at its core. The development will feature nine workforce live/work rental units with storefronts, offering creatives and local workers an opportunity to live affordably while contributing to Grand Lake’s creative economy.

These live/work spaces will support:

  • Artists and makers

  • Creative entrepreneurs

  • Local workforce residents

  • Small-scale storefront businesses

Leasing information will be released as it becomes available.

Support the Second Phase of the Grand Spirit Makerspace: Equipping It!

The walls are up. The vision is taking shape.
Now it’s time to bring the Grand Spirit Makerspace to life.

The Walls are Up; The Vision is Taking Shape

Have you noticed the beautiful new building going up on the corner of Park Ave and Hancock? It’s the Rocky Mountain Folk School’s new Grand Spirit Makerspace, a 3,000 sqft, Makerspace dedicated for woodworking, leatherworking, silversmithing, as well as the heritage crafts that define our region. Once complete, the space will give beginners, hobbyists, ranchers, and visiting learners access to high-quality equipment, safe instruction, and a welcoming place to hone practical skills.

We are so appreciative of the generous financial support we’ve received so far. Through a series of grants, family foundation support, and large organization donations, we’ve raised an astounding $550K — which nearly covered all our construction costs. Although the new building is scheduled to be complete by the end of March, we still need to fill the space — to purchase specialized tools and equipment, as well as worktables, seating and storage for our artisans to create.

Help Us Bring this Makerspace To Life

We estimate that it will take $200K to fill the entire Makerspace. But for now, we are focused on raising $50K by March 31st so we can begin our June curriculum in woodworking, leatherworking and silversmithing. It’s an aggressive goal, but that’s why we are reaching out to the Grand Lake community at large. To invite neighbors, business owners, guests and friends to be a part of this historic venture. No donation is too small — whether you’re able to give $5 or $5,000, every dollar inches us closer to our goal. And remember, because RMFS is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

We’d Love to Celebrate YOU at the Ribbon Cutting

As recognition for donations of $5K or more, we will be creating personalized horseshoes for our Craft Keepers Circle wall, located on the southern exterior of the building. And, if you make your $5K donation by March 31, we can  ensure that your horseshoe will be prominently on display in time for our ribbon cutting ceremony over Memorial Day weekend. Gather a group of friends, a few families or even some co-workers together and get your personalized horseshoe today! DONATE
