Step up to the lathe and explore the ancient\, meditative art of woodturning at the Rocky Mountain Folk School. \nUnder the expert guidance of master woodworker Dennis Fanning—who brings over 30 years of experience—you’ll learn to transform raw wood into one-of-a-kind pieces. \nDay 1 -Spindle work: Learn the fundamentals of spindle turning is about starting with a square piece of stock and turning it round and then adding beads and coves to add interest. Projects include spatulas\, spoons\, juice meddlers\, honey dippers\, mortar and pestle and rolling pins. \nDay 2- Faceplate Work: This day will be about turning hollow form shapes\, like bowls and plates and working across the grain \, developing control over curves and symmetric forms. Learn how to hold and mount wood on the lathe by using faceplates\, screw chucks\, scroll chucks\, and jam chucks. DESCRIPTION:Discover the art of pottery in this five-session guided series designed for beginners and developing ceramic artists. Over the course of five Sundays\, participants will explore the ceramic process from shaping clay to creating finished pieces. \nBecause pottery is a multi-step craft that requires drying and kiln firings between sessions\, projects are completed over several weeks. This format allows students to experience the complete pottery process while receiving personalized instruction and support. \nThe Sunday Pottery Series is a repeatable program\, with content and projects varying based on the experience level\, interests\, and goals of each group. New potters will receive foundational instruction in wheel throwing and handbuilding\, while returning students may continue developing their skills\, refining techniques\, and exploring new projects. \nUpon successful completion of the series and demonstration of safe studio practices\, participants may be eligible to apply for Pottery Membership\, which provides independent access to the pottery studio during designated open studio hours. \nPlease note: This class includes instructor-led sessions only. Open studio access outside of scheduled class time is not included with this series. Independent studio access is available exclusively to approved Pottery Members.
