SUMMARY:Woodturning: Pepper Grinder & Spice Bowls
DESCRIPTION:First Day Spice Bowl Class Description:\nSpice Bowl\, Salt Bowl\, Pinch Bowl; whatever you call them\, these small bowls are endlessly useful and a pleasure to make. In this class we’ll make a matching pair of bowls: simple forms with clean lines\, gentle curves\, and a finish that feels good in the hand. \nSpice bowls don’t take much time or material\, and they work with almost any species and finish. They’re a great project for any skill level — a warm-up for those returning to the lathe\, a confidence builder for newer turners\, and a satisfying design exercise for more experienced turners. \nCreating a matching pair is a good way to build muscle memory\, refine your eye\, and develop techniques that carry over to larger bowls. Even if repetition isn’t your thing\, or if you’ve never made two pieces that truly match\, you’ll pick up practical tips you can apply to whatever you enjoy turning. \nSecond Day Pepper Grinder Class Description:\nCreate a beautifully functional 5″ tall salt or pepper grinder from a solid piece of wood. In this class\, students will turn a seamless one-piece body and install a modern Windsor-style ceramic grinding mechanism — a compact\, durable design that grinds either salt or pepper and will not corrode. The grinding mechanism is self-contained and mounts from the bottom\, making this an approachable project for turners of all skill levels. \nYou’ll learn how to shape the exterior for comfort and balance\, drill the interior to accept the mechanism\, and fit the ceramic grinder cleanly and securely. We’ll cover best practices for sanding and finishing small functional forms\, along with tips for achieving crisp details and a refined silhouette on a short spindle project. \nStudents will leave class with a completed grinder ready for the kitchen or gifting — a compact\, elegant piece that showcases both the wood and the craftsmanship. This is a great small project for anyone looking to build skills and make something genuinely useful. \n\n\n\nWhat’s included\n\n\nAll wood materials \n\n\nCeramic grinder mechanism \n\n\nUse of tools and equipment \n\n\nExpert instruction \n\n\n\n\nWhat’s not included\n\n\nMeals or beverages \n\n\n\n\nItinerary\n\n\nArrive\, check in\, and review shop safety procedures.\nLearn basic wood lathe operation and proper tool handling.\nTurn a matching pair of spice bowls\, focusing on shape\, proportion\, and finishing techniques.\nBreak for lunch (30 minutes).\nContinue bowl turning\, sanding\, and finishing as needed.\nBegin Day 2 with an introduction to pepper grinder design and components.\nTurn the body of a custom salt or pepper grinder from a solid piece of wood.\nDrill and fit the ceramic grinding mechanism.\nSand\, finish\, and assemble the completed grinder.\nReview techniques\, ask final questions\, and take home your finished projects.\n\n\n\n\nHighlights\n\nTurn functional pieces you’ll use every day. From serving spices at the table to seasoning meals in the kitchen\, the projects in this workshop combine craftsmanship with practical purpose. \nWork in a small class setting with a maximum of five students\, allowing for personalized instruction and plenty of one-on-one guidance throughout the workshop. \nREGISTER

In this immersive four-part course\, instructor Nolan Morningstar will guide students through every stage of the transformation process using time-honored techniques and hands-on instruction. \nOver the course of four workshop sessions\, students will flesh\, grain\, membrane\, brain\, soften\, and smoke their hides while learning the science\, history\, and practical skills behind traditional hide tanning. Each class builds on the previous session\, allowing participants to experience the full progression from raw hide to finished buckskin. \nThe workshop will take place September 5\, 12\, 26 & 27 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Individual guidance will be provided throughout the process\, and students will receive handouts to support continued learning beyond the workshop. \nParticipants may work individually on their own hide or partner with another student to share a hide and alternate tasks. Students under 16 should attend with an adult partner. \n\n\n\nWhat’s included\n\n\nAll hide tanning materials and instructional handouts. \n\n\nUse of instructor-provided tanning tools and equipment during class. \n\n\nHands-on instruction throughout all four workshop sessions. \n\n\n\n\nWhat’s not included\n\n\nTransportation to and from class. \n\n\nNon-alcoholic beverages \n\n\nsnacks \n\n\nClothing suitable for messy outdoor work. \n\n\n\n\nItinerary\n\nThis is a physically demanding workshop that involves scraping\, wringing\, stretching\, and outdoor work. \nStudents should wear clothes and footwear that can get dirty or stained. \nSome workshop sessions must be spaced apart to allow proper hide processing between stages. \nfinal smoking will be completed by the instructor after class for later pickup. \nREGISTER
