During the Renaissance\, nuns and monks used quilling to decorate religious objects and book covers with gilded paper strips\, mimicking the look of gold filigree. In the 18th century\, it gained popularity among European aristocracy\, who adorned furniture\, jewelry\, and other items with this delicate art form.
